I first became aware of John's ministry from my friend Craig Hoekenga. Craig had come to love and support the ministry John was in the process of founding when they met more than forty years ago. As time went on, Craig's desire to answer Jesus' call to serve was informed and influenced because of his relationship with John who was helping indigenous pastors, missionaries, evangelists and lay persons preach and teach from the Scriptures using the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. Just as Craig felt God calling him to help those who were without advocates and on their own, John's mission was about helping train and teach in remote and even hostile areas of the world, especially in Central and South America, and then eventually in Africa through an amazing partnership with Chuck Ballard. Personally, I grew up in a house where there were more than one Thompson Chain Reference Bibles in use. My father loved these treasures published by the Kirkbride Bible Company and would often order new editions from them to give to friends. As John discovered, and what had become the inspiration for Help for Christian Nationals, was that there was no other tool exactly like the Thompson Chain Reference Bible that could help people prepare and then deliver doctrinally sound messages and sermons.
