Darkness
Getting up in the middle of the night for a drink of water can be a frightening experience - especially after watching a scary movie. Darkness causes fear - whether or not we're willing to admit it.

God compares life without Jesus Christ to living in the darkness. It's a world without light, without understanding, without joy. Yet we're told that although Christ came to bring salvation to everyone, some prefer to reject Christ and live in spiritual darkness.

What does it mean to "walk in darkness" (John 8:12)? Our culture commonly refers to the "dark side" as anything that is evil. For Christians, it's anything that leads us away from God - certain places or habits, for instance. Following Christ may require a lifestyle change. Don't let your closest friends or your comfortable hangouts lead you to sin. Choosing Christ means choosing the light instead of the darkness.

God doesn't want anyone to "walk in darkness" - to continue living a life of sin, separated from him - but he wants all to come to him for salvation.
